County commissioners disappointed in no-shows at MSTI gathering
By GREG CORR
Ledger Publisher
Jefferson County Commissioner Leonard Wortman, who represents the people on the southern end of the county, said he was disappointed to see that many of the elected officials who were invited to last Wednesday night’s town hall meeting regarding the Mountain States Transmission Intertie (MSTI) did not bother to show up or send representatives in their place.
Wortman served as moderator of the informational meeting in the Whitehall High School varsity gym. The meeting, which was sponsored by the Jefferson County Commission, drew a large audience estimated at 320 people. In addition to Whitehall area residents, people also came from Townsend, the Dillon area and the Butte area to learn more about the 400-mile 500-kilovolt transmission line project that would begin at a substation near Townsend and end in southeastern Idaho. Thirty-eight miles of the line would run through Jefferson County — 30 miles on private property — and part of the line would run past the communities of Cardwell, Whitehall and Pipestone is the preferred route is used.
At the start of the three-and-a-half-hour gathering, Wortman said invitations were sent to U.S. Sen. Max Baucas, U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg, U.S. Sen. Jon Tester and Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, but none of these officials were in attendance and didn’t send anyone in their place to discuss the project.
Those who did attend and serve on the panel included Wortman, fellow Jefferson County Commissioner Tom Lythgoe, state Department of Environmental Quality environmental science specialist Tom Ring, DEQ attorney specialist Ed Hayes, Bureau of Land Management District Manager Tim Bozorth, NorthWestern Energy’s chief transmission officer Mike Cashell, Save Scenic Jefferson Valley Coalition representative Don Kronenberger, state Public Service Commissioners Brad Molnar and John Vincent, and Jefferson County Attorney Matt Johnson.
Among those in the audience were U.S. Representative candidate Dennis McDonald and several legislative, county and municipal officials.
