Whitehall rests in the heart of the Jefferson Valley, a stone's throw from the waters of the historic Jefferson River, close to three different mountain ranges and spectacular recreational opportunities.
Whitehall's population is approximately 1,200 within the town borders with more than 3,000 people living in the greater Whitehall area. The town boasts a quality public school system, active homeschool organization, a well-equipped community library, over two dozen active clubs and organizations, professional medical clinic, 14 local churches representing every major denomination, attractive senior citizen center, a picturesque commercial shopping area and solid town infrastructure. Whitehall is also home to the acclaimed Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Murals and the Jefferson Valley Museum.
Whitehall is close to three metropolitan areas: 25 miles from Butte, 55 miles from Bozeman and 70 miles from Helena. While Whitehall itself has retained its rural identity and small town community spirit, each of the three metropolitan areas have a major airport, college or university and major medical facility.
Whitehall is located along I-90, rests between Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, and is the gateway to Virginia City, Montana's most historic city.
Whitehall is located along the Lewis & Clark Trail about two miles from the Jefferson River, at an elevation of 4,351 feet. Whitehall receives an average of 12-13 inches of precipitation a year, and because the town is located in a broad U-shaped valley surrounded by mountain ranges, the valley floor tends to be drier and warmer than other areas of the state. Whitehall, like all of Montana, enjoys a winter, but the winters in Whitehall are mild and relatively dry. Indeed, Whitehall is known as a "banana belt" area of Montana and many people come to the Whitehall area specifically because of the mild winters.
Whitehall abounds with amenities. The community enjoys a contemporary medical facility in the Whitehall Medical Clinic, and the clinic can perform a surprising variety of tests and medical treatments right in Whitehall. Two established dentists practice in Whitehall, two contemporary assisted living facilities are located in Whitehall, a chiropractor and a massage therapy college call Whitehall home, and several massage school graduates ' attracted by the quality of life ' remain and offer a wide range of services.
Golden Sunlight Mine, Montana's largest gold mine, continues to operate north and east of town in the Bull Mountains. Golden Sunlight is the largest private employer in the area and has mined over 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1983. The mine has provided an economic and tax boost to the community, and has been an excellent corporate citizen. Golden Sunlight has earned many awards for its mine reclamation, community involvement and environmental stewardship.
Liberty Place, a long-term residential care facility for persons suffering brain injuries, has been developed just outside Whitehall and just recently purchased a new facility in Whitehall. The Jefferson Valley Sportsmen Association led a project to build a community fishing pond ' the Piedmont Pond ' in 2005, and the pond is open to any and all anglers. The Jefferson River Watershed Council moved forward on several projects to maintain and improve the water quality ' and fishery ' of the Jefferson River. The Whitehall Recreation Complex has been improved, and rodeos, barrel races and O-Mok-Sees highlight the upgraded rodeo arena, while baseball and softball of all ages takes place at the ball fields.
Whitehall has an active Chamber of Commerce and an attractive commercial district. A devastating fire in March 2009 destroyed a few downtown buildings, but all but one of the businesses impacted by the fire have moved to different locations. The Chamber spearheaded the development of the Whitehall Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Murals and organizes major community events such as Frontier Days and the Whitehall Christmas Stroll. For more information about the Chamber or Chamber activities contact the Chamber at 287-2260. Frontier Days 2010 has been set for July 30-31.
In 2004, the Connor Building was donated to Jefferson Valley Presents, and the building has served as host for a variety of events including plays and musicals, a major outdoor show, community dinners and other events. Since then JVP has disbanded, and local veterans organizations have stepped up to refurbish the building into the "Whitehall Community Center" where many events are now held.
The Whitehall area boasts a large and modern grocery store, drug store, three gas/convenience stores, large hardware store, several automotive/tire shops, car parts businesses, veterinary clinic, excellent gift shops, bowling alley, movie theater, four motels (one with RV hookups) and two campgrounds (both with RV hookups). The Whitehall area is agricultural-based, and many large and small ranches surround the community. Many area residents keep horses for work and riding pleasure.
Whitehall has a weekly newspaper, a low power television station, two wireless Internet providers and local cable television.
And Whitehall offers just about every kind of construction/building services available. Click here for a listing of the local businesses in the business directory on this website.

Whitehall's water improvement project, completed in 1997, ensures an abundant supply of water, and a $5 million wastewater project for the town is scheduled to begin in 2010. A grass strip airport is located at Jefco Skypark, just northwest of Whitehall.
Whitehall also has an active youth soccer program (one of the only towns of its size in the state to do so) and tennis courts. Whitehall has a large youth baseball program and more and more Whitehall baseball players are advancing to play American Legion Baseball for the Gallatin Valley Outlaws.
The Jefferson Valley Museum in Whitehall "preserves the past for use in the future" and provides a complete history of the Jefferson Valley and Whitehall area. The museum, located in an historic barn built in 1914, tells the history of Whitehall and its people through a series of interesting and unique displays.
Lewis & Clark Caverns, located about 15 miles east of Whitehall near the Jefferson River, is one of Montana's most popular and most scenic state parks. The park features guided tours of underground caverns, and the caverns hold some of the most unique cave rock formations in the west. The park, which also has campgrounds and a gift store, attracts some 70,000 visitors annually.
Five major ski resorts are within a one-hour drive of Whitehall. Seven major rivers ' including the fabled Madison, Beaverhead and Big Hole ' with some of the best fishing in the country, are within a one-hour drive. The Jefferson, Ruby and Boulder rivers are virtually within casting distance of Whitehall. The Highland Mountains loom to the south and west, the Tobacco Roots rise in the southeast, the Bulls frame the north and the Pipestone/Delmoe recreation area near Homestake Pass lies directly west. Dozens of mountain lakes, hundreds of miles of trails ' hiking, horseback riding, four wheeling or mountain biking ' await in every direction. In winter, snow abounds in the mountains for snowmobiling.
The big game hunting in the area is unrivaled. Look in any direction from Whitehall, and you're looking at magnificent hunting opportunities. Elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, antelope, turkey, upland birds, and waterfowl are all here.
Montana has no sales tax, property taxes in Jefferson and Madison counties are still comparatively low, and there are five major real estate firms in Whitehall to help you.
